Project: House 351
Date: 2018
Location: Cape Town
Type: Residential
Inhouse Design Studio was approached to design and refresh a private residence in Fresnaye, Cape Town. Our client approached us to modernize the space with contemporary design choices and new furnishing. We created a sophisticated living space that beautifully complemented our client’s private art collection and custom Muralto furniture.
We worked on both the interior and exterior of the private residence, ensuring both the décor and style complemented one another. We painted the outside walls with a textured charcoal colour, also adding a sheen to feature walls. The balcony, which housed both a braai area and pool area, needed to be retiled. We used the same tiling for both the balcony and surrounding interior space, grouping the areas and actuating the open-plan style of the private residence.

The garage- which is directly underneath the balcony- has a large skylight which, seen from above, adds another feature to the area. We focused on an open-plan design, utilising the ample space of the residence to emphasise the incomparable views of the Atlantic Ocean. From the garage, residents walk into the house passing an entrance table- for keys and other objects- and the guest bathroom. The guest bathroom, decorated with black marble vanity and lined silver wallpaper, introduces the dark colour tones we used throughout the residence.
The lounge area has an extensive feature wall, where we installed a unit that houses a 72-inch TV as well as shelving for decorative objects and books. The wall unit is a lighter grey than the dark shelving, which contrasts the wall unit beautifully. We introduced light grey custom-made Muralto furniture in the room, with scatter cushions and a carpet that incorporates different hues of grey grouping the area.
The dining area- opposite the lounge- showcases an incredible Gregor Jenkins eight-seater dining table with Muralto chairs. The dining table and chairs are centred by our client’s incredibly vibrant art piece- adding a pop of colour into the room. The kitchen has fully integrated Smeg applicances, leaving the area uncluttered. We also installed a wine cooler in a pull out drawer in the kitchen.
We designed the kitchen with darker timbers and lighter cupboards, adding a smoky grey splashback and a dark marble as the island countertop. Our colour choices aimed to infuse comfortability with a contemporary modern look, creating an utterly open-plan environment.
At the top of the timber-staircase is a snug area with a long curved wall where we placed a grey Muralto curved couch. The TV hangs above a marble top and light timbre unit, accentuating the grey colour tones used in the furniture upholstery and lighter lament flooring. Replacing a traditional coffee table, we added a large grey ottoman filling the room.
Leading from the snug area is the residence’s two bedrooms. We added an open-plan bathroom to the second bedroom- making both bedrooms en-suite- adding frosted vinyl to the shower for privacy.
The main bedroom has a walk-in cupboard and open-plan bathroom. We added a step leading up the bathroom, creating a view to the outside and subtly separating the two areas. The bathroom- with marble flooring- also has a built-in marble dresser with three large mirrors framing the curved wall in the bathroom. The double shower is encased in glass with a frosted vinyl finish and the toilet around the corner for additional privacy.
The walk-in cupboard has a sizeable grey ottoman in the centre of the curved timber open cupboards. We added a strip of LED lighting to each cabinet, adding a calming ambience to the room. The main bedroom also has a TV unit- similar to the second bedroom- which displays a beautiful timber. Both bedrooms have a balcony, where we added a see-through balustrade to emphasise the scenic view.
